One protocol change, one measured count, and a week of standard-setting activity across the agent commerce stack.
Block brings Bitcoin Lightning to x402, and the catalog holds near 2,900
This week's clearest change came from x402, the open payment standard that lets an AI agent pay for a web service directly over HTTP, using the long-dormant HTTP 402 "Payment Required" status to demand payment before returning data. Block, Jack Dorsey's payments company, joined the x402 Foundation and contributed Bitcoin Lightning support to the protocol, PYMNTS reported. Lightning gives developers an option that settles in Bitcoin, alongside the dollar-linked stablecoins that have supplied much of the protocol's activity, Cointelegraph reported via TradingView.
The x402 specification repository changed this week, its head commit moving from 6323ec74 to dd896985 on 28 September, tracked at the x402 GitHub. Erik Reppel, x402's creator and a member of its Technical Steering Committee, said the protocol was designed so different networks could be added without tying the standard to one payment rail, CryptoNews reported.
The activity numbers cited this week came from the Foundation's own reporting. The x402 Foundation reported 75.41 million transactions and $24.24 million in volume over a recent 30 day period, crypto.news reported.
A measurement of agentic.market, the largest catalog where AI agents buy services from other agents, converged this week at 2,895 unique services, from a sweep run 28 September against the agentic.market services API.
payment capacity has been substituting for identity across these rails for a while, and adding Lightning as a settlement option under x402 extends the pattern that Davenport described as the payment-as-proof economy, argued in The Payment-as-Proof Economy, Davenport, 2025-12-21: when an agent proves it can pay, the payment itself becomes the credential the service checks.
Elsewhere the week ran deep on adjacent moves. Shopify added WebMCP tools that let browser-based AI agents read a checkout screen, update supported fields, and submit an order, introducing get_checkout, update_checkout, and complete_checkout, TechCrunch reported. Mastercard and Danske Bank completed what was described as Denmark's first AI agent payment on live card rails, with a customer approving a purchase on Priceless.com, TechTimes reported. Those are dated facts, and the transaction economics were not disclosed.
The Universal Commerce Protocol specification, the open standard Shopify and Google co-developed for agent-to-merchant checkout, also changed this week, its head commit moving to 1b4e7bbd on 25 September, tracked at the UCP GitHub.
