The x402 Foundation Gets a Director as Agent Payments Climb
A governance appointment lands in a week when card networks, infrastructure providers and platforms all shipped new pieces for agent commerce.
The x402 Foundation Gets a Director as Agent Payments Climb
x402 is an internet payment protocol that lets software pay for online access, named for the HTTP 402 Payment Required response that tells a program payment is needed before it can obtain a resource. On October 1, the Linux Foundation, the nonprofit that houses open-source projects, named payments executive Michael Hursta as executive director of the x402 Foundation, which the announcement says works with more than 50 active members on an interoperable payment layer for AI agents, applications and APIs, according to the Linux Foundation.
Settlement counts kept climbing. x402 payments on the XRP Ledger passed 10 million, a milestone RippleX head of engineering J. Ayo Akinyele shared on X on October 1. By October 3, the activity dashboard run by t54, the company that operates the settlement infrastructure, showed 11,965,947 entries in its x402 transaction history, as reported by cryptonews.net.
Other launches arrived the same week. Mastercard expanded Agent Pay with trust and intelligence services, including a score that estimates how likely it is that an AI agent initiated a transaction, now in U.S. testing, per Mastercard and as reported by PYMNTS. Cloudflare opened a closed beta of its Monetization Gateway, which charges AI agents for consumption using HTTP 402, per Cloudflare. Shopify switched on agent checkout through WebMCP, adding tools to read, update and complete a checkout with the buyer's approval, per TechCrunch.
most of this week's news sits on the payment side of the transaction: a director for the payment standard, rising settlement counts, and new ways to score a purchase after an agent makes it. Payment as the place where an agent's standing gets tested is the subject of The Payment-as-Proof Economy, Davenport, 2025-12-21. This is a house reading of the week; the sources above report the events, and the frame is ours.
Measurement unavailable this week: the catalog sweep failed before producing a figure, so no count of listed agent services prints here.
Calendar note: Open Source Summit Europe runs October 7 to 9, per the Linux Foundation announcement above. Announced dates are calendar facts and nothing more until they arrive.
